Habitat ReStores are building material liquidation centres whose profits go towards Habitat for Humanity's mission, i.e. the construction of decent, affordable homes for low-income families. The ReStore carries new merchandise donated by distributors, retailers, manufacturers, and construction companies to support Habitat for Humanity's mission.
First store in Quebec
The Habitat for Humanity Montreal ReStore is the 50th to open in Canada, the 1st in the province of Quebec. First started in Winnipeg in 1989, ReStores now dot Canada and the United States. In 2008, ReStores in Canada represented sales of $23.3 million.
Montreal, QC - October 17, 2006 – Habitat for Humanity Montreal announced today the first construction project in east-end Montreal and also officially opened Habitat’s 50th ReStore in Canada and the first in Québec, located in the LaSalle borough of Montreal.
They also announced that they have received a donation of $360,000 over the next three years from long time Habitat for Humanity supporters: Genworth Financial Canada, a leading mortgage insurance provider, retailing giant Home Depot Canada, and MCAP, Canada’s largest independent mortgage and equipment financing company. The donation from the Founding Sponsors was announced at the official ceremony to open the province’s first- ever Habitat for Humanity ReStore, a building material liquidation store. Montreal, April 14th, 2005 Habitat for Humanity Montreal announced today the opening of the first Habitat ReStore in Quebec, more precisely in the LaSalle borough of Montreal.
Habitat ReStores are construction material liquidation stores that sell quality used materials and discontinued products. These materials are supplied by distributors, retailers, manufacturers, construction and renovation companies, as well as individuals participating in Habitat for Humanity's mission. The profits from the sale of these goods go towards Habitat for Humanity's mission, i.e. the construction of decent, affordable homes for low-income families.
There are 39 ReStores across Canada (http://www.habitat.ca/restoresc3.php). In 2004, these stores generated sales of $12.6 million, returning profits of $5.3 million to Habitat affiliates across Canada. ReStores reduce the amount of construction waste that is incinerated or buried, thereby contributing to a reduction of greenhouse- gas emissions.
