Thanks to the work of volunteers, to careful management, and to donations in money and materials, Habitat builds and renovates simple, decent houses in partnership with the chosen families.

Habitat homes are sold to the families at no profit, with interest-free mortgages. Homeowners mortgage repayments are used to create a Revolving Fund that allows Habitat for Humanity Montreal to finance the construction of more houses.

Habitat for Humanity does not "give" houses. Apart from making mortgage repayments tailored to their financial means, homeowners must also put in several hundred hours of “sweat equity”, by helping build their house or by participating in various Habitat initiatives.

You can start the process of becoming a Habitat family by filling this form (Print, fill then fax or mail). We will keep your application for 2 years from the date of reception. We will contact you if we build in your borough (Montreal).

The three basic family selection criteria are:

  1. The need for simple, decent housing…
We consider the living conditions of the family, i.e. the quality, cost, safety, and size of the apartment lived in at the moment of applying with Habitat for Humanity.
  2. The capacity to pay the mortgage…
We evaluate the family's financial situation and income, as well as its capacity to meet other expenses associated with home ownership.
  3. The family's wish to become homeowners…
The family becomes a Habitat for Humanity partner by agreeing to put in several hundred hours of "sweat equity".

Habitat houses are designed based on a list of strict requirements that allows us to build simple and adequate houses, at an affordable cost.
